If our 50' tall mast is made to be visible to the folks outside your event, and if it attracts just 50 more patrons to your event, then we will have paid for ourselves and covered your fee!

The "Privateers of the Dauntless" setup an encampment that represents the Armed Merchant Ship "Dauntless".  The Dauntless is an elevated stage with a full main mast and crow’s-nest, complete with rat lines, two yardarms and sails.  The mast is 16 inches in diameter and 45’ ft. in height off the main deck and is workable aloft.  We display and fire two 4.5’ long naval 4 pounder cannons and 3 swivel cannons.  We set the stage with barrels, crates, bails, sacks, etc, as cargo.  Additionally we carry and demonstrate various navigational tools such as the cross staff, the back staff, sandglass, traverse board, binical, logline and lead line.

Each season we add more and more detail to enhance the representation and educational abilities. This year we are debuting a full rebuild of our Dauntless stage adding an elevated wood Quarter deck and even more elevated Poop Deck.  Our daily routine is intended give the illusion of a full ship with crew.  Shifting of watches, going aloft to the crow’s nest, bell sounding the time, cargo moving, commands barking out. Our sailors will be tending to their duties mending sails and lines, the carpenters making repairs and the purser conducting trade of our cargo. Our group is VERY patron interactive and particularly child friendly, as this is our primary focus. We interact with the patrons by demonstrating maritime skills and teaching maritime history as well as full on performances with live steel duels, ships navigation, and other maritime skills.

Our group specifically leans away from the typical 1700 "pirate" persona (unless requested otherwise) and aspire to be more of a legitimate 16th century armed merchant. (Private Man-O-War) We are a theatrical troupe, developing song, in the form of shanties, gigs, and live steel duels. We provide educational interaction and pre-event educational materials. (See our web site for more educational information). We do ask for a fee/donation for our performance, which is set well below market for similar performances and is used for logistics/transportation costs, liability insurance coverage, prop maintenance and new prop acquisition. All of the performers are volunteers; none of the performing troupe is compensated for their performances.

This year we are changing our format and will be allowing the patrons on board the Dauntless throughout most of the day for self guided tours to interact with the crew as they crew go about their duties.  We will be continuing the very popular “Great Gun” cannon drill in which our gunners instruct patron children on how to load and run out the ships guns.  Usually about 30 min. each.   Additionally one of the officers will present on seamanship and/or navigation around mid-day.  There are always various other short gigs throughout the day.

For our non-setup presentations we bring in various nautical props from the ship and provide a condensed and focused presentation on various nautical topics.  This tends to be customized for the event, based on allowed time, age group and by the available crew functions that will be presenting.  We cover such topics as attire, navigation, ships watches and bells, discipline, flags, cargo, money, coopering, medical practices, and more.
